Keyway position

The position of the keyway on the shaft is simple, only the selection of the appropriate key size needs some attention (assistance from the selection tables). When we design levers with a keyway connection we must place the keyway at the side of torque-force transferring (see above figure). With this design we increase the strength of the connection and the durability of the lever. Levers transferring torque-force at high speed are under dynamic loads, this means increased stresses at the keyway connection. In situation like this close tolerances and manufacturing precision is required. Most keyway selection tables include also the required tolerances for correct design.
