Socket button head cap screw: The elegant screw |
Button head cap screws are designed and recommended for moderate fastening applications: covers, machine guards, hinges, locking light-weighted parts, etc. But they have one major advantage: a better aesthetic design. Its low height head with the big spherical radius gives a modern streamline design. In addition it is much more difficult to get injured from its head. The screw is very elegant; it seems that it comes naturally from inside the fastening surface. Its diameter is almost equal (smaller) to the diameter of the corresponding washer and this is why it is used to hold parts in place. In the below figure one button head cap screw is used to hold a small size ball bearing in place. The button head can be used because there are not any axial loads. Holding a ball bearing in its place like this is a simple and elegant solution.

Another application is to hold in place small shafts. In the below figure you can see a small shaft which is placed inside a blind oblong slot. Near at both ends of the slot we drill thread holes. When we tighten the two button screws their flat round heads hold the shaft in place. Also in this case is critical to have the direction of the applying forces towards the oblong slot.

The button head cap screws are ideal for gauging applications, where the aesthetic criterion is always considered. The button could be seat on the flat surface or on a spot face on the surface. The spot face of only 1-2 mm deep makes the button head screw to “disappear”. This technique is very common when there are many button head screws, especially in round patterns. Another parameter for aesthetics is the color of the screw. The stainless steel and the zinc plated button head screws look very nice with all kinds of mating parts surface coatings. If you have time and you wish produce an aesthetically beautiful assembly try to use some socket button head screws, they will transform your design.
