Keyway position

Keyways are essential in machinery design. Torque transferring or rotation fixing at levers, shafts, linkages, power posts and others is provided by a key and a keyway with low cost and reliability.

Internal keyway

One design principle which every designer must keep in mind is to design difficult to manufacture features with the appropriate cuts (holes and slots) in order to facilitate manufacturing and assembly.

Airvent

In many cases press-fitted connections can successfully be replaced by bonded (glued) connections. One minor disadvantage of such connection is the liquid state of the glue during installation.

Pin hole location

One method for securing a shaft in a hole and prevent it from rotation is the usage of a pin. Although this is a very simple design many of us don't know the correct location of the pin hole.

Methods for correcting wrong center distance between pin holes

Many of us have difficulties in final assembly, when we discover that we have wrong center distance between pin holes. How to fix this problem fast, cheap and functional? Read this article.

Calculating the radius of a cylindrical milling cutter

This article describes a method for calculating the radius (or diameter) of cylindrical spiral, disc, angle, slitting and form cutters when the cutting depth and the boundaries of the milling cut feature are known.

Calculating internal radius with known boundaries

Internal radius in design engineering is a very useful feature. Often we need to add a radius which passes through a given intersecting point (an edge) and tangent to two lines (surfaces). With a cad program such a calculation is a “piece of cake”, but without one, a puzzle.

How to secure a square shape shaft end without a square cut on the mating component

When we want to prevent the rotation of a shaft we use various methods (pinned, screwed, friction, etc.). One method is to use a shaft with a square shaped end (across flats) and an identical square slot feature on the mating part.

How to make internal threads on case hardening steel parts - [Leave Soft]

Often when taping case hardening steel parts many manufactures make a mistake. They apply case hardening to the thread. This could cause strength problems especially if the thread is under dynamic loading.

An old good principle

Perhaps the simplest and most valued drafting principle is the old one: “anything that can be sketched can also be calculated”. For many years before (and after) the wide spread of cad-cam (computer aided design and manufacturing), designers in all areas of production used plain trigonometry for calculating the basic dimensions of a design.
